Here are some questions about the Association
that have often been asked since our original
foundation and incorporation, with our
responses.
Yet another organisation?

Yes. The Association is the first body to be
formed whose purpose is to further the mission
of public health nutrition, and to represent its
interests, throughout the world.
So it’s a just a club for senior nutrition
scientists?

No. Membership is open to people at all
stages in their careers. Many members are indeed
distinguished food and nutrition scientists,
teachers and researchers. Members also work in
United Nations agencies and government, for
professional and civil society organisations,
and in the community. Membership is open to all
committed to the improvement of public health
and of nutrition, who are sympathetic with our
aims and objectives, fulfil our conditions of
membership, and who want to work with us.
Who’s in charge?

The membership, with responsibilities
delegated to its Council and Presidium. The
Association is a professional body with no
formal, financial or any other connection with
industry.
Why ‘public health’ nutrition?

Conventional nutrition science is concerned
with nutritional, metabolic and associated
biological factors that affect health. Public
health nutrition is an integral part of public
health, as a profession and vocation. It also
engages with the social, economic, and
environmental determinants of food systems and
dietary patterns, which shape population health
and well-being.
What’s it all about?

Association members altogether form a global
network. We are committed to building the
capacity of the profession. We are also
committed to advocacy and action reliably based
on evidence. We work to ensure that in all
possible circumstances, adequate nourishing food
is available to and affordable by all.
Do you think you can make a difference?

We believe so, yes. The recent and current
linked financial, fuel and food crises show that
collective action for the common good is a prime
responsibility of governments and other actors
including civil society and health professional
organisations. Now is the time for public health
action in the great tradition.
What services do you offer?

As a member, it’s your Association. Our
success depends on our own collective action.
Our value is all about the energy, vision and
work of our members. |
