World Nutrition in 2011: Demolishing the Food Guide pyramid; then
RUTF stuff ; Voltaire and why it is good to be small; the DOHaD thesis
Last month's main WN commentary was on World Nutrition itself, and its significance for – well, world nutrition. Above are four WN covers published early last year. Taken together they indicate the range of our coverage. The cover at left introduces one in the series of Carlos Monteiro's series on ultra-processing. This one celebrates the demolition of the US 'food guide pyramid'. Next is the cover for the commentary by Michael Latham, Urban Jonsson, Elisabeth Sterken and George Kent on the overuse and misuse of so-called ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF). Next, Voltaire illustrates Thomas Samaras's thesis that it is best to be small. Then right, we ran a summary of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) thesis, which has revolutionary implications for dietary guidelines.
Below are four WN covers published in 2010, our first year. We began in May (left) with Michael Latham's denunciation of what he and many correspondents see as the indiscriminate use of vitamin A supplements. This, our first commentary, has been read and downloaded by many thousands of people, including policy-makers in national governments and the UN system. The June cover (next) by Harriet Kuhnlein featured one of a series of stories on the protection of the food and nutrition of indigenous peoples throughout the world. If you look carefully at the next cover you can discern Association founder member Nevin Scrimshaw, at a meeting for young nutrition leaders held in the hills above Santiago, Chile. This illustrated an editorial on the ethics of nutrition conferences. Finally, right, the cover showing obese children introduced the first commentary by Carlos Monteiro on ultra-processing. This one commentary has now been downloaded or accessed by over 30,000 people from over 75 countries and territories, and the whole series to date has been downloaded or accessed by around 75,000 people.

As you will see on our previous and current home pages, we are also featuring leading speakers every month. This month is the twentieth normally monthly issue of the website, and the seventeenth issue of WN. Some features, like the Association’s Aims and objectives, how to apply to become an Association member, and Members’ profiles, are permanently posted on the website.
Other contributions, as those in WN, 'This month', news, articles, commentaries, and regular columns/blogs, are renewed every month. Generally these have a facility for responses and discussions, available only for that month. News items are usually not saved. After the month of issue all the contributions to WN, and the regular columns/blogs, and some other major contributions, are usually available permanently in this 'Previous months' section.
